What do Physical Therapists do?

Plan, prepare and carry out an individually designed program of Physical Therapy treatment to maintain. Improve or restore Physical functioning, alleviate pain and prevent physical dysfunction in patients. Perform and document an initial exam, evaluating data to identify problems and determine a diagnosis before intervention.

Why is Physical Therapy a good choice?

Physical therapists work with patients across the lifespan who have chronic conditions, illnesses and injuries, providing rehabilitation and treatment to prevent injury, and optimize their quality of life. They also help patients improve flexibility and strength so they can maintain independent and active lifestyles.

At Medstar our physical Therapist’s first help is to make sure that Our Patients’ problems are mainly musculoskeletal problems. Their research about our patient helps to work out if there is likely to be an underlying condition. If it’s felt our patient needs further assessment, our PT should advise them on who is the best reference to undertake this necessary and further assessment.

How long will my entire course of therapy last?

Treatment plans for most patients typically last between 8 and 12 weeks. Our staff will also consult your medical insurer to determine the number of PT visits that are approved. When your PT and MD feel that additional visits are required to prove most effective for your treatment, MedStar will directly request additional visits from your insurance company. Our office manager will work with you to determine the extent of your coverage and any out-of-pocket costs, if applicable.

How often are re-evaluations performed?

MedStar follows current Medicare guidelines and performs re-evaluations every six weeks. During these sessions, your PT will determine how your treatment is progressing and whether additional therapy will be required. After these sessions, you may be shown how to perform a home exercise program to allow you to continue your rehabilitation independently and cost-effectively. If you’re MD feels that land-based exercises would be beneficial to your treatment, your PT will make arrangements to gradually move you into such a program.

Expect to work with the same therapist every time?

At MedStar, we know how is important trust between patients and PTs for the healing process. For that reason, we assign you a single primary PT who will help you set goals and stay updated on your progress. However, since effective physical therapy often depends on a team of dedicated healthcare professionals, different therapists may assist you during your rehabilitation. With that said, we try hard to ensure that you will see the same PT for the majority of your visits. Each of our PTs meets regularly to examine each patient’s treatment plan and discuss ways to ensure the highest standard of care.

Will I experience a higher level of pain during my treatment or immediately afterwards?

We strive to make our sessions pain-free by carefully examining your pain levels, activity level, and symptoms to the frequency and intensity of the exercises required for your rehabilitation. In most cases, patients report only a couple hours of tiredness and a higher level of soreness common to most exercise. If an exercise is painful, please tell your PT immediately! Only in extremely specific cases—such as a frozen shoulder or after total knee replacement—is it ever necessary to “work through” pain.
